Shaftesbury is the disability charity that connects people with their communities. We tackle social isolation and the barriers that can cause this in the lives of disabled and vulnerable people.

Through a wide range of disability, education, training and community services, we promote inclusion and wellbeing for all. Together, we work to see people take part, contribute and be valued.

We put the elements in place that all add up to connected lives and communities.

What’s the problem?

Right now, many people in our society are facing barriers that cause them to be socially isolated. Disabled and vulnerable people are often most at risk. From lack of awareness for disability and mental illness, homelessness, unemployment, or lack of education opportunities, the obstacles are obvious.

Social isolation is a growing problem in the UK. Britain has been called the ‘Loneliness capital of Europe’.

Why does it matter?

Social isolation is seriously bad for your health. When people are socially isolated, their life and wellbeing outcomes are lower. But research shows that when people enjoy good community connections, their health, life outcomes and wellbeing are far stronger.

What is Shaftesbury doing about it?

Shaftesbury understands how to make communities work for people. We help people take part, contribute, and be valued.

Through a range of disability services, community projects, training and support, we’re working to break down barriers.

We create connections between our disability services and community work, to deliver joined-up responses to local care needs and reduce social isolation.
