67% of people in prison and 15% in the community cannot read, or struggle to. Even more struggle with basic numeracy.

Shannon Trust transforms lives by supporting people to learn to read and do basic numeracy. We fulfil an unmet need around adult learning, supporting people who’ve fallen through the cracks in formal education.

Working in 100 prisons in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, we train people in prison who can read and do basic numeracy (mentors), to teach those who can't, or want to improve (learners). In the community, we train volunteer coaches to support learners.

Learning to read and do numeracy has a huge impact – not just on the learner, but on everyone around them; whether that’s their mentor, their family and friends, prison or service staff, or the wider community.

  • Day-to-day life becomes easier – filling in forms, applying for a job or course, budgeting and so on
  • Family relationships and connections improve, including those with children, plus it helps to break the cycle of low literacy
  • It improves confidence and self-esteem
  • It reduces re-offending and improves communities

We believe nobody should be left out of learning.

Leaving a legacy to Shannon Trust will help us to support thousands of people to learn to read and do basic numeracy every year.

We know that low literacy and numeracy often runs through families. By breaking that cycle for one person, your gift will improve literacy and numeracy for generations to come.
