UniBrass works to bridge the gap between school-level music-making and continued participation in music beyond university, at a point where many young people would otherwise stop playing altogether. Music-making empowers young people to be the best they can be. Playing in university bands helps participants become better musicians, builds their confidence, and enhances their wellbeing through supportive communities.
The focal point of our activity is the annual UniBrass contest, where university bands from across the UK compete in two sections. In over a decade of existence, this entirely student run contest has grown to include 23 bands and has been hosted by the universities of Lancaster, Warwick, York, Bangor, Sheffield, and Cardiff! Band Camp, the UniBrass summer school is another focus of the year, offering affordable, high-quality music education and performance experiences to university-age participants on a six day residential jam packed with rehearsals, performances, activities, socials and creative workshops.
We are committed to nurturing talent, fostering a love for brass band music, and ensuring that young musicians have the opportunity to continue their musical journey throughout and beyond their university years.
As a volunteer-led charity, UniBrass relies on grants and donations in order to support young musicians. Legacies enable us to continue our work, safeguarding the future of brass bands.
